U.S. Congresswoman Herrera Beutler
Protecting Our Fish Resources
As your member of Congress, I would like to update you on my efforts to protect our salmon and steelhead resources by better managing the population of sea lions on the Columbia River. I appreciate you contacting me in the past to share your thoughts on this issue.

On July 23, the Water, Power and Oceans Subcommittee of the U.S. Committee on Natural Resources met to consider my bill entitled the Endangered Salmon and Fisheries Predation Prevention Act. With unnatural levels of sea lions in and around our waters, our community’s efforts to preserve the Columbia River salmon are facing a serious setback. This bipartisan solution will give fish managers the tools they need to lethally remove predatory sea lions and protect our endangered salmon and steelhead.

Maintaining a balanced sea lion population is not just important to endangered salmon, but also to the benefits stemming from recreational fishing on the Columbia River system. Recreational fishing alone helps support more than 5,100 jobs and $247 million in income for Washington residents. However, as much as 20% of the spring salmon run may be consumed by sea lions. This damage has a real impact on the recreational fisherman in Southwest Washington and the benefits they provide.

I am optimistic that this legislation will advance through the congressional committee process so it will be eligible for a vote by the entire U.S. House of Representatives. We are fortunate to call Southwest Washington home with its beautiful and diverse landscapes and many natural resources, and I am committed to preserving our environment for future generations.

I invite you to visit my website at www.JHB.house.gov with your questions, for additional information, or to sign up to be kept up to date on these issues. Please do not hesitate to contact me if I can ever be of assistance.
