Protecting the Columbia River, Northwest waterways from invasive species

Western states are seeing a troubling spread of quagga and zebra mussels, which are an invasive species capable of quickly destroying hydropower infrastructure, damaging water supplies, clogging filtration systems, and hurting fisheries. Once these species become established and spread, they are difficult and costly to eradicate. In some states, invasive mussels are already costing industries and businesses hundreds of millions of dollars.

I successfully championed amendment to this year’s Water Resources Development Act of 2016 to direct and speed up resources to support watercraft inspection stations along the Columbia River – helping ensure these species don’t contaminate our waters. The bill was passed by the House and is awaiting a vote in the Senate. Read more about my efforts here

Finalizing an important solution for Pearson Field Airport

I’m thrilled that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) recently finalized a solution that allows local pilots to continue flying in and out of Pearson Field Airport, and that will help this small airport remain a great asset for Southwest Washington.

In 2012, the FAA’s proposed rule creating the “Pearson Box” would have placed severe restrictions on aircraft operating out of Pearson Field.  Strong concerns were raised by the general aviation community as to whether the Pearson Airfield would be able to continue to operate if the proposed rule was finalized.  I joined Senators Murray and Cantwell in pressing the FAA to address this issue in a manner that would create a safe airspace for both airports, while ensuring that Pearson would be able to continue to operate.

I want to thank all of the Pearson advocates – local pilots, the City of Vancouver, Pearson Field, air traffic controllers, Senators Cantwell and Murray – who continued to work as a team to allow Pearson Airport to remain an important hub for the region’s aviation community.

Proud to receive the “Hero of Main Street” Award for supporting Washington retail businesses

I was honored to receive the “Hero of Main Street” award from the Washington Retail Association earlier this month. Small and medium sized businesses are the engine of our local economy in Southwest Washington. I will keep fighting to improve infrastructure and protect our small businesses from burdensome regulations and tax increases.
