U.S. Congresswoman Herrera Beutler
Preventing veteran homelessness
Last week, I went to visit Housing Opportunities of Southwest Washington to see how they are doing to give a hand up to folks in our community who have hit hard times.
The U.S. House Appropriations Committee on which I sit recently approved the Housing and Urban Development Appropriations bill to provide strong resources to support local efforts like these.

I toured the Phoenix House that provides housing for pregnant and postpartum women coming out of drug treatment programs. I also toured the Stratford that houses 20 veterans who were at risk for being homeless. Learn more about my work to strengthen housing help for individuals who have hit hard times by clicking here.
Still focused on veteran health care appointment wait times that are too long

Last month, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Military Construction and Veterans Affairs Appropriations Bill for 2017 that included accountability measures I authored to address long wait times and other issues in the Portland VA. An unreasonably lengthy VA hiring process and numerous staff vacancies have led to delayed care for Southwest Washington’s veterans. The VA insists they are correcting these problems, but it’s happening too slowly for Southwest Washington veterans who need quality medical care.

This week, I brought together veterans, professionals who assist veterans with accessing services, and the VA to listen and learn and determine what we can do together to help solve this problem. It was a productive conversation and I am grateful for the veterans who took the time to share their experiences with me. Read more about our discussion here.
