Hosting the Librarian of Congress at Camas Public Library

A rewarding part of my job is bringing resources from DC to benefit Southwest Washington. It was an honor to host Dr. Carla Hayden, the Librarian of Congress, at the Camas Public Library last month. A big thanks to Dr. Hayden for sharing her knowledge of libraries, books and advice, and for all the librarians around the region who joined for the discussion of access to the Library of Congress’ resources.

For instance: did you know the Library of Congress has a Surplus Books Program where they donate books to libraries and schools? It was a privilege to select books straight from the Library of Congress to donate to our own Camas Library. I encourage any school or library in need of books to get in touch with me - we would love to help out!

Hearing about Meals on Wheels, skills-training programs impact in Cowlitz County

Thanks to an invitation from the Lower Columbia CAP, I had the privilege to hear in detail how Community Service Block Grants are helping folks in Cowlitz County. Meals on Wheels is one of the programs benefiting from the increase in federal dollars I helped secure. This program serves more than 35,000 meals a year to vulnerable citizens here in Southwest Washington.

I was also able to stop by CAPtured Treasures retail store in Longview to learn how the Community Service Block Grants are helping folks learn skills training to get back to work. (I was excited about a couple purchases I made for the kiddos, too!)

ASSISTING SOUTHWEST WASHINGTON RESIDENTS

Mrs. Melanie Leary of Ridgefield contacted our office due to her issues receiving a passport from the U.S. Department of State. Mrs. Leary had a delayed birth certificate which caused her case to be held up in processing. We reached out to the Seattle Passport Office and were able to get the processing pushed forward. Mrs. Leary was issued a passport and she was able to go on the cruise with her father.

Securing critical funds
for the Vancouver fire department
It's essential our Vancouver firefighters have the tools they need to carry out their duties as safely as possible, especially in high-risk environments.

I was pleased to support the City of Vancouver's request and help secure nearly $1 Million from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) in critical emergency upgrades for the fire department.

Chehalis Recreation
Park groundbreaking
It was an honor to attend the playground groundbreaking at Recreation Park in Chehalis recently. A big thanks goes out to the City of Chehalis and the Chehalis Foundation for pushing this project forward.

I was happy to answer the call to assist with this project and am looking forward to kids and families around Lewis County enjoying this new, beautiful playground!
