As Americans, it’s important to take every opportunity we have to thank the men and women who serve and sacrifice for our nation, as well as their families. We also remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice to defend our way of life. We are afforded many blessings because of their willingness to protect our freedoms.
This time can bring on many different emotions; sadness for those we have lost, joy for the liberties we enjoy, pain for the injuries that were sustained, and pride for our great Nation. I know there are many here today who are remembering the sacrifices of loved ones, a burden you carry each day. I hope you are reminded today that your community stands with you and does not forget the sacrifices that were made for every one of us. Every service member and veteran represents a family and support system who bare the sacrifice for our freedom as well and we honor them today.
This debt that we owe to those who serve our nations is why I continue to fight for our veterans in Congress. I have fought to ensure more accountability at the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to make sure that our veterans have access to the care they’ve earned. Just a few weeks ago, the House of Representatives passed a bill that builds on the accountability measures I put in place last year. We are just starting to receive the reports and they are highlighting key issues that must be addressed. These have been important first steps but I acknowledge that we have more to do.
On this Memorial Day, let us remember that there are still men and women, fathers and mothers, sons and daughters on foreign soil who need our continued support and help. Let us remember the sacrifices of those families who share their loved ones with us so that we can be safe and let us honor our brave soldiers who have fallen while making the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our freedom. God bless our military members and their families.
