More can be done to stop sexual assaults in our military
There has been an alarming rise in sexual assaults in our military recently – they went up by 50 percent during the first nine months of 2013. The problem was highlighted for me when I traveled to Afghanistan and the Middle East and met with our troops last spring.
Despite the attention the problem has started receiving, Congress must do more and take the necessary steps to adequately confront it. Read more about this issue and my efforts to address it HERE.

Resident Spotlight: New Home for the Holidays
Military veteran James Gunter, his wife and two year-old son were living in a small, old RV in the Randle area as he was waiting for his disability rating decision from the VA. The claim had been bogged down by the bureaucratic process, and little progress was being made. Meanwhile, the bills were piling up for Mr. Gunter and his family, who were living without things like a phone or other basics. He contacted my office and asked us to help achieve a resolution with his claim. My staff got to work, and within 60 days Mr. Gunter received the disability claim and back pay he was promised.
Mr. Gunter and his wife were able to pay off most of their debt. They also moved the family into a two- bedroom apartment and told us they were able to have an enjoyable Thanksgiving and Christmas for the first time in years. With VA help, Mr. Gunter is now attending college in pursuit of a degree in robotics.
It is an honor to assist Mr. Gunter and folks throughout Southwest Washington.
