U.S. Representative Jaime Herrera Beutler today pledged to take action to reinstate a federal requirement that trains carrying oil or other flammable liquid would need to be updated with electronic air brakes.

Earlier this week, the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) finalized a proposal to revoke the 2015 safety requirement.

“USDOT’s rollback of safety regulations for oil trains is the wrong decision,” Jaime said. “With trains already carrying oil through the Columbia River Gorge, we should be working to reduce the chance of an incident – but this action goes in the opposite direction. While I understand there are costs associated with this requirement, safety must remain paramount when it comes to transporting hazardous materials through our communities which is why I am currently developing legislation to reinstate the stronger safety requirement.”

Jaime has consistently supported enhanced safety measures for crude-by-rail, including championing the Fire Department Proper Response and Equipment Prioritization Act (FD PREP Act) which directs FEMA to make grants that give firefighters the tools and training to respond to derailments of trains carrying crude oil a high priority. She also successfully fought to include $221 million for federal rail safety operations to improve the safety of grade crossings and the movement of crude oil in the funding package that passed earlier this year.
