Jaime Herrera Beutler today issued the following statement urging the U.S. Senate to pass a bill allowing Southwest Washington transportation projects to continue.

“It’s been two weeks since the U.S. House passed with overwhelming bipartisan support (367–55)  its measure to fund the Highway Trust Fund through March of 2015.  While we continue to work toward a longer-term solution to provide stable funding for our nation’s highways and infrastructure, this bill is absolutely necessary to keep our infrastructure projects on pace without significant disruption.  Unfortunately, with the August recess less than four days away, the U.S. Senate has not yet passed its own bill or considered the House’s legislation.

“U.S. Transportation Anthony Foxx has repeatedly warned that, without immediate action from Congress, the Highway Trust Fund will become insolvent as soon as next week, causing projects to come to a standstill.  The Washington State Department of Transportation recently announced that this would stall or eliminate 45 projects statewide, including multiple in Southwest Washington.  Funding transportation infrastructure is the federal government’s responsibility.   I hope that the Senate can quickly resolve whatever challenges are standing in its way and partner with the House to get this done.”
