The BABES Act will help parents traveling with infants

On behalf of Southwest Washington moms, I’m very pleased that the president signed my Bottles and Breastfeeding Equipment Screening Act (BABES Act) into law this week.

Too many parents have fallen victim to inconsistent treatment from the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) when traveling through airports with food and feeding equipment for babies, having food thrown away, equipment broken and missing flights. This bill will ensure TSA will be able to better assist parents traveling with breastmilk and formula. Read more about the BABES Act here.

Safe Medications for Moms and Babies to improve health of pregnant women, nursing moms

On December 13, the president signed the 21st Century Cures Act, which included my Safe Medications for Moms and Babies Act. Currently there are gaps in research regarding pregnant and lactating women who take prescription medication. My legislative effort will improve research so doctors and moms can make educated choices about what medications are safe to take during pregnancy and while breastfeeding. Read more about my Safe Medications for Moms and Babies Act here.

The bipartisan 21st Century Cures Act will provide advances in medical innovation, mental health reform, and improve cures and treatments for chronic conditions and diseases.

Protecting the Columbia River ecosystem, infrastructure

The president signed my initiative that will help prevent the spread of devastating invasive species to the Columbia River ecosystem. Quagga and zebra mussels pose a threat to the Columbia River and hydropower dams, and could have an negative economic impact to the Pacific Northwest of $500 million.

My anti-invasive species initiative, which is included in the 2017 Water Resources Development Act (WRDA), will focus on preventing these species from spreading here by creating new watercraft inspection stations and updating existing ones. Watercraft inspection stations inspect boats for invasive mussels, and decontaminate those vessels. Inspections are the important prevention steps to stop the spread of invasion species. More information regarding my initiative being included in the final version of the WRDA can be found here.

Flying safe through the Columbia River Gorge

I applaud the BPA’s quick implementation of visibility markers on its wires to make it safe for pilots flying through the Columbia River Gorge. The installation of visibility markers lowers the danger in the navigable air space frequently used by military, training, firefighting, and personal aircraft. Read about my efforts here.
